There is one thing that is universal for all pirates. No, not a lack of personal hygiene! Only the high-seas pirates were known for being stinky. All pirates are known for their predilection for the Jolly Roger. The venerable skull-and-crossbones design dates back to the early 18th century, when naval pirates would fly their flags to signify that they wouldn't follow standard maritime rules of engagement, and that merchants should give up without a fight or face brutal and bloody murder.

Own a Toshiba Satellite?

The company has issued a voluntary recall on their T Series notebook computers due to a "burn hazard."

The recall is fairly significant in size and scope. Around 41,000 units globally are included in the recall, namely, the Satellite T135, Satellite T135D and Satellite ProT130. These were sold rather recently -- between August of last year and August 2010 for between $600 and $800. According to the report, the DC input jack (where the AC adapter plugs in to charge / power the machine) can "overheat to the point where the plastic base around the jack melts, which could lead to burns on users who touch it."

Good news is that Microsoft has released a fixit kit for the DLL hack that covers 100 or so apps. Bad news? It's really for Sysadmins and the average user shouldn't touch it.

The FixIt Tool works only on machines that have already installed the workaround Microsoft published last week. The latest point-and-click release is designed to make the previous workaround easier to use and fine-tune a variety of settings that will ensure compatibility with applications such as Outlook 2002, members of the Microsoft Security Response Center said.

I didn't think Amazon had a chance against Apple until I saw this - apparently instead of the draconian drm that Apple gives away with their video - Amazon lets you do a heck of a lot with your stuff that you legally bought.

Amazon is selling some TV shows for the same price that Apple plans to charge for rentals.

A number of ABC and Fox shows, including hits like "Glee," are available on Amazon's service for 99 cents per episode--the same price as Apple's coming rental option. But with Amazon, the episodes can be downloaded or streamed and do not expire.
"When you buy a video, your viewing rights do not expire (except as provided in our Terms of Use)," Amazon states. "You can watch a video you own online and download it to 2 locations (TiVo, DVRs, and Windows PCs). You can also transfer a video you own to 2 portable devices.

While this does not apply to every movie or show - it's a goodly step towards what should be - simply when you buy something... it should be yours to do with as you will. Take a note Apple.

LED's have come a long way - and with these new developments will most likely replace every form of lighting in the next few years.

Researchers from the Nichia Corporation in Tokushima, Japan, have set an ambitious goal: to develop a white LED that can replace every interior and exterior light bulb currently used in homes and offices. The properties of their latest white LED - a luminous flux of 1913 lumens and a luminous efficacy of 135 lumens per watt at 1 amp - enable it to emit more light than a typical 20-watt fluorescent bulb, as well as more light for a given amount of power. With these improvements, the researchers say that the new LED can replace traditional fluorescent bulbs for all general lighting applications, and also be used for automobile headlights and LCD backlighting.
