It's good for your bones -
a new analysis of 100 commercial beers shows the hoppy beverage is a significant source of dietary silicon, a key ingredient for bone health.
Though past research has suggested beer is chockfull of silicon, little was known about how silicon levels varied with the type of beer and malting process used. So a pair of researchers took one for the team and ran chemical analyses on beer's raw ingredients. They also picked up 100 commercial beers from the grocery store and measured the silicon content.
Silicon huh? Maybe we should all start eating those packs of Silica Gel that comes with everything from Coasters to Pepperoni these days.

According to AdAge, Budweiser is this year’s biggest advertiser — privy to five minutes of air time. The beer company launched its social media campaign on Friday, and already thousands of people are taking part. The idea, essentially, is to infiltrate every level of Facebook (Facebook). First, you might see the targeted ad for the campaign in your newsstream (see the photo above). If you are so inclined to vote, you must first become a fan of the beer:
That's a bit tough to swallow eh? - I'll not become a fan of Budweiser - but their commercials are usually great.

Finally there's a beer that competes with Coors Light for "close to water" status!
Clocking in at a slender 55 calories and 1.9 grams of carbs per 12-ounce bottle, Select is the self-professed "world's lightest beer," a statement that's as enticing as "the world's tastiest rice cake."

Sounds interesting - though I haven't seen it otherwise I'd have a review.
"We asked Warren and his wife to choose the style of beer," Rangel says. "They like wheat beers but nothing overly spicy or heavy. Their concern was that we create a beer that was easy to drink, accessible to nontraditional craft-beer drinkers and that people could drink a few over an evening without getting out of control."

btw if any of you have tried any of the beers of the week - feel free to write a review in the comments.

Beer - from space ? Well mostly.
Japan's Sapporo Breweries, the entity that brings you those large silver tins of beer to complement your rainbow roll, announced this week that it is launching space beer.
According to Reuters, Sapporo "Space Barley", with its cute outer-space sparkling starred label, has been created using barley grown on the International Space Station.
It's limited and not for general sale so getting some of this brew is gonna be tough - however the proceeds go to charity.
I know you'll be wondering how to get your fingers around Space Barley's neck. It seems you will have to trust your good fortune and your, um, trust fund. There's a lottery. The 250 winners will enjoy a six-pack. Just one. The approximate price of being able to drink in a little space is $115. Which works out to about $19 for each 330 milliliter of celestial flavor.

Slashfood has this beer of the week thing going and this one caught my eye - I'll have to check it out.
But for its newest winter seasonal, Magic Hat has turned to the dark side. Howl is a schwarzbier, aka a black lager. The German style melds a lager's drinkability with roasted flavors. It's all the fun of drinking a stout without feeling you've swallowed a lead weight.

Move over last worlds strongest beer - Brew Dog has come out with a 32% beer called "Tactical Nuclear Penguin"
I love the name!
Of course the health people are all up in arms - and why I dunno, its not like you cant get ahold of say - 100 proof rum or anything right? They're thinking that people will drink the beer irresponsibly. I don't think that's really possible ... I'd imagine the stuff has got to be like motor oil.
Tactical Nuclear Penguin beats the previous world record of 31 per cent which was held by German beer Schorschbraer. It was placed in the Guinness Book of World Records yesterday after being tested by experts at Edinburgh's Heriot-Watt University.
The beer began as a 10 per cent imperial stout then was aged for 16 months in two different whisky casks.
It was then stored in a freezer at a chilly -20°C for three weeks to reach its massive alcohol level.
There's only 500 bottles available so you'd better hurry if you want one. ![[beer]](http://geeg.info/rsc/smilies/cheers.gif)

It has yet to be named, but will be marketed in bottles with corks instead of the usual metal caps. It will pack a punch, with 10 percent alcohol.
Boston Beer CEO Jim Koch and Josef Schraedler, managing director of Weihenstephan, told The Associated Press Wednesday that their two companies have been working together for two years on the beer, which they will make and market jointly.
Sounds nifty - and if I know Sam Adams, it'll come with a hefty price tag too.

Gotta smile at this whole story - even the cops got a kick out of it. Bummer it got taken away tho.
The officer added: "We were very impressed with the workmanship so we congratulated him and then we confiscated the machine."
hahahaha -

Yup, Bud lite will probably never get to air this on TV... Hella funny tho.

For the record, bottles only here. Not that there's anything wrong with the can.

Sigh, I suppose it's a sign that the recession is ending - though aside from that, higher prices for beer sucks.
Brewers across the globe are hiking prices to compensate for lower sales volumes and higher commodity costs.
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer and maker of Budweiser, announced plans to raise prices Tuesday.
"We plan on taking price increases on a majority of volume and in a majority of markets this fall...

Whazzzaaaaaaaaap?

Yep, well - sorta. If you are tired of bottles and cans - and maybe want friends to be able to ask "hey, whats on tap?" without a keg or any work whatsoever....
Beer conglomerate MillerCoors, has responded to sliding sales with some tweaking in the packaging department. For $20, their new "Home Draft" beer box will keep 1.5 gallons -- equivalent to 16 12-ounce beers -- of Miller Lite or Coors Light fresh in the fridge for about 30 days, a change from previous "mini-keg style" distribution systems meant to be consumed in one sitting (with a number of guests, of course!). This disposable, recyclable and affordable "draft beer system" has already begun test marketing in a number of cities.
heck - kinda gotta try it just to see.

SWANTON, Vt. – Police say a truck carrying 40,000 pounds of beer overturned in Vermont and closed a highway for several hours.
Darn - and I wasn't anywhere near there at the time. ![]()
Travis Greeno, assistant chief of the Swanton Fire Department, says the truck had to be offloaded before it was pulled out of the ditch. He said it was "going to be a long day."
There is good news at the end of the article tho.....

Here's a good handful of the Beer ads of yesteryear - with my favorite right at the top (Hamms)
yeah, listen to it once and you'll be humming the tune all day.
- by RobOh it's true alright - tho not the original... ( that'd be like drinkin dust)
Called Chateau Jiahu, this blend of rice, honey and fruit was intoxicating Chinese villagers 9,000 years ago—long before grape wine had its start in Mesopotamia.
Later this month, you can give it a try when a new batch hits shelves across the country. The Beer Babe blog was impressed, writing that it is “very smooth,” and “not overly sweet.”
There's also a 9th century Finnish coming out - so Beer lovers -we get a chance to travel back in time...
That's plenty cool.

I used to know a little bit about this from my buddy Osh, but since forgot - and I knew there was a reason more or less for each type. Wikipedia came to my rescue.

Or as we call 'em here - Packy Stores...
This guy has taken the recession by the horns - For $5 ($2.50 for senior citizens), he'll take your order and deliver it to your house in his own car.
Palazola said the smallest order so far has been for a 12-pack of beer, but he'd deliver a nip if someone wants it.
This is a pretty cool way to try and keep business going. It does remind me that Canada has been doing this for quite a while - back in the 80's we were up there for a few days and I still remember "Dial-A-Bottle"
Like - could ya deliver me some beers eh?

Only $5.00 a bar.

Secondly, how are ye gonna take a fine Irish beer, like Guinness, and make that green? It's already black!!!

Silly Deer - they forgot to take any beer. Oddly enough, the BBC has the footage of the event.

This kinda makes that video of opening one with a chainsaw look a little less impressive dontcha think?
